Chapter Sixteen

Quincy was struggling to stay optimistic. Despite having witnessed Jen’s death, she had spent months afterward somehow expecting her to walk through the door. The three weeks she’d been waiting for Lindy to call were somewhat easier—because Lindy was alive and going about her life. But they were also unbearable—because Lindy was alive and lived nearby but might not choose to come back to see whether they could have more together. She was on tenterhooks waiting for her phone to ring, and every day that went by made it less likely it would. In her head she’d arbitrarily given Lindy a month to call, but the days dragged. And, though she forced herself to focus on learning during the day, to focus on coaching girls basketball at the Y on Saturdays, and to focus on immersing herself in other worlds, other places, other lives by reading in the evenings, she couldn’t stop thinking about how she’d felt with Lindy and wanting more.

Yesterday she’d concluded if Lindy hadn’t called by the end of the allotted month, it would mean she wasn’t interested. After all they’d only spent that one weekend together. And obviously the weekend meant more to her than it did to Lindy. So, rather than be pathetic she would mail one of the pictures to her and move on.

And then she remembered again that she didn’t know Lindy’s last name or where she lived or worked. What an asshole. She could probably track her down through Maggie, but Lindy had made it pretty clear she didn’t want to be contacted and she would respect that. She could set all the deadlines she wanted. But unless she wanted to appear to be stalking Lindy, her only option was to wait. Not something she was particularly good at.

Deadly desk duty wasn’t helping. She felt like a trapped animal having to be indoors all day doing boring paperwork. She started to wonder if being a detective was the best job for her. The only positive thing about desk duty was the fixed hours and the freedom to do things like go out to lunch and stay in touch with the people she’d rescued. She’d been welcomed into the families of those she’d rescued and once they got past the hero thing, they’d connected in a deep way, like close family. She and Mama were close and she’d had a happy childhood, but she’d always envied friends with large connected families. Her bond with Grace was the strongest. Despite their lives being so different, they connected on a visceral level and were becoming close friends. Grace was the only one still in the hospital and Quincy stopped by frequently with lunch for the two of them.

As much as she enjoyed the opportunity to socialize, when the chief summoned her to her office she was hopeful she’d be assigned to patrol again. Only the local press showed up from time to time now, usually in response to the articles written by the people she’d rescued.
